The Romans had a Republic. The Republic started at 509 B.C. to 29 B.C. The Republic started when they overthrew their Etruscan conquerors. The Etruscan ruled Rome over a hundred years. A Republic was where there was 2 consuls and 1 dictator. The 2 consuls command the Roman army and had high power in the Roman empire. The consuls could agree or veto the dictators idea or the other consul. Veto means to reject a decision. The dictator is the ruler of Rome. If you were a dictator, you could only be ruler for 6 months.
Julius Caesar was the first dictator of Rome. He was born on 100 B.C. His father Gaius Caesar died when he was 16. Julius Caesar then became a strong military leader. Julius Caesar made a deal with Pompey and Crassus and became the first Triumvirate. They also controlled Rome throughout the 50s B.C. Julius Caesar has won many wars. His soldiers were loyal to him.He then became dictator for a longer time. After that he decide to be dictator for life. He was hungry for power.The senates turned against him, because Julius Caesar was becoming way too powerful. The senates did not like that, so they decide to assassinate Caesar. The senates call Caesar into a meeting, when Caesar came the senates took at their daggers and stabbed Caesar 23 times and Caesar fell to the ground died. Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus led the senates to kill Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar was assassinated on 44 B.C.
Julius Caesar's adopted son Augustus Octavia then became a ruler of Rome. Augustus Octavia is knowing as the first Roman Emperor. The senates let him be a emperor. He was a successful emperor. He rebuilt much of the city, reformed the Roman system of taxation, and establish a standing army. Augustus Octavia died on 14 A.D.
